What stained is concrete?
Stained concrete is your existing slab, cleaned and colored with a stain that soaks into the surface, then sealed. It is not a coating like epoxy. The color is translucent, so every floor has some natural variation.
Acid stain is one common type. It reacts chemically with the concrete, so the color is mottled and variegated rather than flat. Because every slab is different, no two acid-stained floors look the same.
Where it fits:
-
Interior floors after carpet, tile or wood comes up and the slab underneath is sound
-
Living areas, dining rooms, kitchens and hallways
-
Patios and other outdoor concrete

Stained Concrete vs. Polished Concrete vs. Epoxy Flooring

The best concrete finish depends on the look you want, the condition of your slab, and your budget. Here’s how stained concrete compares with polished concrete and epoxy flooring.

Stained Concrete
A good fit for homeowners and businesses that want rich, earth-tone color while keeping the natural character of their concrete.
-
Pros: Typically costs less than most coating systems. Offers warm, varied color and design options such as grids and borders. The stain itself does not form a surface coating that can peel.
-
Considerations: Existing patches, glue marks, and cracks may remain visible and influence the finished appearance. The protective sealer needs periodic recoating.
Polished Concrete
A good fit for spaces where durability, low maintenance, and the appearance of the concrete itself are priorities.
-
Pros: Very durable and low maintenance, with no topical floor coating.
-
Considerations: Grinding and polishing require more time and specialized equipment. Color options are more limited.
Epoxy Flooring
A good fit for spaces where a more uniform appearance, decorative options, and easy cleaning are priorities.
-
Pros: Helps conceal surface imperfections and offers a wide range of colors, including decorative flake and metallic finishes. The finished surface is easy to clean.
-
Considerations: Usually costs more than staining. As a surface coating, epoxy depends on proper concrete preparation; poor preparation can lead to coating failure.
In October 2026 we acid stained about 1,000 sq ft of floor through the living room, dining room and into the kitchen of a San Antonio home. Here is how it went:
- Old flooring out, slab scraped. Once the carpet and linoleum were gone, the crew scraped the old linoleum glue off the slab.
- Prep and repairs. Pulling the carpet tack strip had spalled the slab in spots, so we repaired those areas and some cracks before staining.
- Layout. Blue tape was laid across the floor in a diamond grid, running from the front room through the arches into the kitchen.
- Stain. Brown acid stain went down in the fields between the tape lines.
- Pull the tape. With the tape pulled, the lighter bands look like grout lines, with darker squares where the lines cross.
- Seal. The floor was sealed to a high gloss. The finished floor is a deep brown-amber that picks up the window light.
The whole job took 3 days.
